Namun, ketika ide-ide modern itu diadopsi, muncul kelompok-kelompok agama tertentu yang melarangnya. Bagi Khamami Zada dalam karyanya Islam Radikal: Pergulatan Ormas-ormas Islam Garis Keras di Indonesia (2002), pihak yang menolak ide-ide modern seperti yang disebut sebelumnya, dapat dikategorikan sebagai kelompok radikal. Para aktivis dari kelompok Islam radikal ini biasanya mengancam dan melakukan persekusi kepada individu yang tidak setuju terhadap pendapatnya.
